English grammar rules are guidelines that help to make correct sentences and avoid mistakes in English communication. These grammar rules are followed to speak and write in English so that our communication can make sense.

In this article, I will share the most important English grammar rules that you must follow to communicate better and more effectively.

English Grammar Rules With Examples

Rule # 1: Sentence Structure

A basic sentence structure includes a subject and a verb. It may also include objects sometimes, but that is optional.

Examples:

  • She reads a book.
  • They play soccer.
  • He writes a letter.
  • I read a newspaper.

A sentence without a subject or verb is incomplete.

Rule # 2:

The first-person singular pronoun “I” is always capitalized in writing, whether it comes at the start of a sentence or in the middle.

Examples:

  • After having tea, I went outside to play.
  • I read a newspaper.

Rule # 3 :

In a sentence, a singular subject is followed by a singular verb. And when we use a plural subject, we must use a plural verb. This requirement is called subject-verb agreement. It means that the subject must agree with or match the verb in the sentence.

Examples:

  • He reads a novel.
  • They read a book.
  • We play cricket.
