for example:

  • in the morning (phrase)
  • She wakes up early in the morning. (sentence)

“in the morning” is a phrase and it does not convey a complete thought and therefore can not stand alone. Therefore, we use phrases in the sentence to complete the message or thought that make sense.

Here are some of the most common examples of phrases used in everyday English conversations.

  • a cup of coffee
  • is reading a book
  • extremely happy with the results
  • in the evening

How to Identify a Phrase?

As mentioned earliar, a phrase functions as a single unite. To convey its meaning, a phrase can not stand alone by itself. It need to be added in the sentence to complete the message.

To identify a phrase, see that if it convey a complete thought that make sense. If a phrase or group of words convey a complete message, then it is not a phrase. Instead, it is a complete sentence. The reason is simple, a phrase can not stand alone by itself.

The second most important thing that differentiate between a sentence and phrase is that a basic sentence structure contains a subject and verb. However, a phrase does not have a subject and a verb. 

Let’s take a look at the following two examples to understand a phrase:

  1. running through the park
  2. she is running through the park

in the first example, running through the park is incomplete thoguth because there is no subject in the sentence and it does not tell us what is running through the park. 

in the second example, we know there is subject in the sentence and it makes sense for us to understand who is running through the park.

In English, numerous types of phrases are used in communication. Here are some of the most common types of phrases:

  • Noun Phrase
  • Verb Phrase
  • Adjective Phrase
  • Prepositional Phrase
