What is an Adjective Phrase?

An adjective phrase is a group of words that works together to describe a noun or pronoun in the sentence. In other words, a noun phrase provides more information about the qualities, characteristics, and other details about the noun. Just like an adjective modifies a noun by giving more information, similarly an adjective phrase adds more detailed information about the noun in the sentence.

Examples:

  • She has a dress full of bright colors.
  • The book on the table is very interesting.
  • She is proud of her achievements.

The Structure of an Adjective Phrase

An adjective phrase has two main components: an adjective and other words that add detail to its meaning. An adjective is the main word in the adjective phrase. however, other words in the adjective phrase can be adverbs, prepositional phrases, or other modifiers.

Two Components of an Adjective phrase:

  • Adjective (the main word)
  • Modifiers (words that describe or change the mining of the adjective by modifying it)

Functions of an Adjective Phrase

The main function of an adjective phrase in a sentence is to provide more information about the subject or object by modifying nouns and pronouns.

for example:

  • The book on the table is very interesting. (describing noun)
  • She is proud of her achievements. (describing a pronoun)

In the first sentence, an adjective phrase modifies the noun and tells us more about the subject (the book). In the second sentence, an adjective phrase describes the pronoun (she) and gives us more detail about the pronoun.

Types of Adjective Phrases

Adjective phrases have two main types that are used in the sentence and appear anywhere in the sentence.
